We are delighted to have Blood Bikes Wales on board. They are a really enthusiastic group of people who use their skills and give their time to help the Health Service in Wales.
The NHS uses its own transportation system to move blood supplies, plasma, documents and other items between hospitals during the working week. However, outside those weekday hours, on weekends and bank holidays the NHS depends on the police, the ambulance service, or even taxis and couriers to transport vital supplies.
This is where Blood Bikes Wales comes in, their volunteers provide the NHS with out-of hours transport saving substantial sums which can be used for frontline patient care. They also provide an interim service in some areas with week night services. Blood Bikes estimate that for each pound they receive in donations, the NHS will save at least five pounds.
Their service is free of charge, staffed entirely by volunteers and operates even on Christmas day.
